Letters: Letter: North Carolina Art

To the Editor: J. J. Goode’s “36 Hours: Research Triangle, N.C.” (June 14) claims that those familiar with the Met or Getty “might scoff at the relatively succinct collection at the North Carolina Museum of Art.” In the early ’70s I studied art history under Otto von Simson at Berlin’s Freie Universität. He regarded the North Carolina Museum of Art, above, as “a jewel of a small museum” and during his stints at Harvard made time for excursions to Raleigh. Don’t be fooled, y’all! Good things come in small packages.

Letters: Letter: Arles

To the Editor: Joe Nocera’s article “Seeing Provence from the Slow Lane” (June 14) on cycling reminded me of a lovely trip my husband and I took to the region. Using Arles as a base, we easily used buses and trains to reach Les Baux and Avignon, and had plenty of time for long walks. During a meal in Arles, we had an experience I call “Metropolitan Diary Provençal .” We had a view of the Roman arena and a cobalt sky, and across the alley two girls about 5 and 7 were playing. They had a paper crown, a glittery wand and a large faded cloth with a traditional print. They chattered. They sang. They danced. Acknowledging our enchanted faces, our waiter smiled and said: “Ah. Ici gentil carnaval!”Barbara Berman.
